Planning Ahead
Planning ahead means you decide what you want for your funeral arrangements. Then, you record these plans for your loved ones to use when the time comes. You make your decisions now, so your loved ones won’t have to make them for you.
Preplanning means thinking about your wishes, documenting them and then making sure your loved ones know where to find your choices. It does not mean you have to pay for anything at this time. You haven’t contracted with anyone to purchase any services, so you don’t have to pay for them right now.
It’s never too early to start preplanning. There’s no pressure now, so you can make better, more informed decisions, which also helps your family. When the time comes, there will be no question about what you wanted; those questions will already be answered.
Everyone. Whether you’re beginning to consider your own options, or you’re helping an aging parent organize theirs, almost anyone can start planning for their final service right now. Doing this work in the present can save a great deal of time and stress later on.
Making a plan means documenting your wishes in some way. Funding a plan means knowing how you’ll pay for it. You can even arrange payment ahead of time, which locks in current prices and protects your family from dealing with inflated prices. You can always document a plan without paying for it. It costs nothing to send your family or attorney an email outlining your preferences.
You can document every aspect of your desired service: burial or cremation, burial place, service music, readings, cultural traditions, even who will officiate. If it’s an important part of your service, you can document it. You can also document what you don’t want, such as an open-casket service, or if you don’t want a service at all.
No. There is no cost when you document your wishes. You can make a decision about funding at another time, when it feels right for you.
Yes. A plan is designed to give you and your family peace of mind. It doesn’t lock you into anything. You can review and update your choices as your life or wishes change. If someone passes unexpectedly or moves away, you may want to alter your plan. You’re always free to do that.
