– Our History
Chapel of the Chimes was founded in 1909. Our facility soon expanded, designed by Julia Morgan, one of America’s first female architects. She used the techniques she learned at Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris to design our building, bringing traditional Parisian influences to Oakland’s diverse community.
The building was dedicated on Memorial Day, 1928, and remains a beautiful place of permanent tribute. The interior arches and other details invite reflection and remembrance. The Morgan addition focuses on high ceilings and abundant natural light to create a lighter space than is often found in mausoleums. Aaron Green, a protege of Frank Lloyd Wright also contributed his designs to our location.

Chapel of the Chimes is more than just a funeral home. It is a space that allows you to be a part of something larger where Oakland remembers the past and the present. Designed by a prominent female architect, this landmark serves as the resting place for many prominent people. Figures as diverse as explorer Harriet Chalmers Adams and musician John Lee Hooker are interred here. We offer respectful historic tours where the community can admire the architecture and appreciate the historical influence on Oakland today.
The architecturally based above-ground mausoleum was designed as a permanent tribute, and the niches and columbariums remind visitors of the many lives and legacies represented here. Some of the glass-front niches display keepsakes and tributes that point to another time, even as they reflect a life well lived.
