Our Story

With a proud tradition of serving area families since 1909 , Chapel of the Chimes Oakland is an architectural gem with great historical significance. Redesigned in 1928 by renowned architect Julia Morgan of Hearst Castle fame, it was conceived as a haven of peace and tranquility with an innovative array of gardens, cloisters, alcoves, stair wells, fountains and chapels that rose toward vaulted ceilings and were illuminated by soothing natural light. The project is considered by some as Morgan’s master work.

This meticulously maintained property is an exquisite setting in which to celebrate the life of a loved one. It is also the final resting place for some of the area’s most notable residents, including blues legend John Lee Hooker, explorer Harriet Chalmers Adams, U.S. Congressman John A. Elston, Oakland Raiders legend Al Davis, and baseball greats such as William Frederick “Bones” Ely and Dick Bartell.

Known for its dignity, peace and serenity, Chapel of the Chimes Oakland offers the one-stop convenience of an expansive funeral home and on-site crematory as well as cremation memorialization and above-ground entombment options.

Having provided exceptional service for more than 100 years, we’re proud of the reputation we’ve built on quality, sincerity and trust, with services that celebrate the life of each individual and respect the wishes of every family. Today, we are leaders in our profession, caring for families from all faiths, traditions and cultures with integrity and genuine compassion.

I was very impressed with the facilities and the service provided by Chapel of the Chimes staff at a recent funeral for a family member. I’ve been to a lot of funerals in my 53 years and the compassion for the mourners, professionalism and attentiveness to the details demonstrated by Todd, Cliff and Dominique were nothing less than top notch. I would highly recommend Chapel of the Chimes to anyone wanting empathetic and professional treatment while honoring their loved one in a special way.

My husband passed recently, and the folks at Chapel of the Chimes were fantastic with all the details. They made us feel comfortable. A special shout-out to the ‘Todds’ — Todd Parker and Todd Walker – and to Clifford Davis for guiding us through the unconventional service we had. You guys made it spectacular. You too, Patrick!

I recently attended my grandmother’s memorial service. The chapel itself was very beautiful, with lovely architecture and peaceful surroundings. We exercised many Chinese traditions and it was so comforting when the staff was understanding of our concerns. They never once made us feel like our traditions were difficult to accommodate. This is a beautiful place that made the memory of my grandmother’s passing a little easier to bear. I extend my deepest gratitude.
