Walter Charles Hicks' Obituary
Walter Charles Hicks was born in Merced, California on August 4, 1947 to proud parents Walter Hicks Sr. and Charity Montgomery Hicks. Walter accepted Christ into his life and was baptized at an early age.
Walter, affectionately called Sonny, attended elementary schools in Los Angeles and West Oakland, attended Burbank Junior High School in Berkeley, graduated from Berkeley High School and continued his education to earn a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley. While attending Cal, he became involved in local political movements.
In 1967, Walter married his soul mate Pamela Kelley. To this union, one son, Derek Hicks was born. They later assumed guardianship of a second son, Chamu Gaines.
Walter worked with the Berkeley Unified School District throughout college. Upon graduation he joined his father-in-law in the family business for a short period. He later joined the Metro-Media advertising firm, Foster and Klieser, as an account executive until his retirement in 1998.
Walter was an avid Raider and Forty-Niner fan, he enjoyed fishing and boxing matches, cruising in his classic van and just kicking it with family and friends. He recently renewed his faith in Christ and joined the Rock of Ages Missionary Baptist Church of San Pablo, California.
Walter was preceded in death by his father, Walter Hicks Sr., his stepfather, George Crowe and one brother Kevin “Danny” Crowe. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Pamela Hicks of El Sobrante, CA; two sons Derek Hicks of El Sobrante, CA & Chamu Gaines of Richmond, CA; two grandchildren LaTanya and Deavozea. He is also survived by his mother, Charity Montgomery of Oakland, CA; his sisters Cherrie Carter (Bobby) of Walnut Creek, CA; Alice Hicks of Los Angeles, CA; Susie Hicks of Los Angeles, CA; Starlight Hicks of Pasadena, CA; his brothers, Andre Crowe of Oakland, CA; Ray Hicks of Vallejo, CA and Angelo Hicks (Marina) of Rialto, CA; brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of loving relatives and friends.
He will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
