Michael Sagehorn's Obituary
Michael Robert Sagehorn
1960 – 2024
Michael Sagehorn passed away peacefully on October 16, 2024, surrounded by family and friends. He was 64 years old.
Michael retired in June 2024 after 22 years of teaching social studies in the Oakland and Antioch public schools. Though he had faced heart issues during the past year, his decline earlier this week was sudden.
Throughout his life, Michael wore many hats: Marine Corps infantry officer, railroad operations manager, rugby player and coach, teacher, scout leader, and devoted husband. He was especially passionate about mentoring students and rugby players, often those from challenging backgrounds. To his family and many others, he was a hero.
He will be deeply missed for his wisdom, whether on coaching rugby, fixing bikes, or backpacking equipment. His family will especially miss the lively debates about politics and environmental, labor and California history that often took place over Sunday dinners.
Michael is survived by his wife, Vicky Sagehorn; his son, Derek Sagehorn, and daughter-in-law, Elizabeth; his two grandsons, George and Peter; his father, Bob Sagehorn (Joyce); his sister, Sabrina Bonnette; his brothers, Geoffrey Sagehorn (Sandy Thoren) and Adam Sagehorn and nieces and nephews..
A celebration of Michael’s life will be held at 1pm on November 3, 2024, at the Up and Under Pub (2 W Richmond Ave. Point Richmond). Friends, former students, rugby players, and family are welcome to attend and share their memories.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Michael’s memory to:
Bay Area Wilderness Training
East Bay Youth Rugby Foundation
Donate — Berkeley Rhinos Rugby Club
