Thomas Smith
Lyman was an icon in my generation of 'kids' who grew up in the Cross Street Playground neighborhood of Westfield, Massachusetts. In the era of boys pick-up baseball, basketball, and playground football games, Lyman was regarded by all of us as a gentle and FAST giant. He could smash a baseball, run fast, and he was bigger than the rest of us, while at the same time, he always played fair and considerate. We all sought Lyman to play on our 'side' of the pick up games. The friends we played with were many.
Sadly, the neighborhood lost many-a kid to work, college, adulthood, career moves, and marriage. Things change. My brothers and I will always remember Lyman as a friend that whenever he could, he joined us at the Cross St. Playground to play in a game with us. His family lived on Lindebergh Blvd., parallel to Cross St. God Bless you, Lyman.
Tom Smith, who grew up at 36 Cross St.
