Larry L. Jolivette's Obituary
Larry Lee Jolivette, a man for whom music was the cornerstone and spiritual calling of his life, transitioned in Oakland, California, on March 4, 2026 wrapped in the love of family and friends. Born the oldest child of Anne Sampy Jolivette and Wilson Jolivette, in Lafayette, Louisiana on December 16, 1953, he carried the soulful rhythm of his roots throughout a life defined by curiosity and making deep connections with everyone he met.
Larry was a masterful pianist, touring and playing with various Motown artists throughout his career. Through his music Larry possessed a rare ability to connect with people at depth. He was known for being straightforward and direct, yet he moved through the world with a sweetness that drew people, especially children, to him. His laughter was infectious and fueled by his sharp intuition and endless desire to understand.
He was a true wanderer. A fearless traveler, who often explored new landscapes without the aid of a map or GPS, trusting his instincts to lead the way. For Larry there was no such thing as being lost, it was just an opportunity to explore somewhere new. His heart was particularly tied to the African continent, a place he visited several times and held in high regard. Larry loved an adventure!
Larry’s love for his family was unmatched. His daughters Shontel, Leeah and Sarah, were his pride and joy. They could always count on their dad's strong, reassuring and loving presence and wisdom. For them he was the embodiment of kindness. For his siblings and parents he was the family's anchor, always inspiring, encouraging and teaching, from a place of love and integrity. Larry met the love of his life, Chingwell while living in Minnesota, and knew without question that she was the one. Larry’s beautiful heart, humbleness, and honesty won her over, and continued to nurture and fuel their marriage for 27 harmonious years.
He leaves behind a family he loved deeply: his spouse, Chingwell Mutombu; daughters, Shontal Chaves, Leeah Brekhus, and Sarah Kamin; granddaughter, Katana; father, Wilson Jolivette; brothers, June Kelly, Floyd and Anthony Jolivette. Larry was preceded in death by his mother, Anne Sampy Jolivette. Larry’s life was a song played with passion and authenticity. He will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, his directness, and the music he left in the hearts of all who knew him.
