John Lewis Immel's Obituary
John Lewis Immel, 83 of Oakland, passed away Thursday, October 26, 2017. He was born in Dallas, TX on January 25, 1934. John was the son of the late Chester W. Immel and Mary Jane Willis Immel. John graduated from W.B. Ray High School in Corpus Christi, TX. He continued his education, graduating medical school from the University of Texas at Galveston. John served as a Medical Officer in the United States Air Force for two years. Following the serve, John began a private practice of internal medicine and gastroenterology in Oakland that would span the next 35 years.
In 1965 while practicing at Samuel Merritt Hospital, Dr. Immel met the love of his life, Roberta (Bobby) Turner. They were married May 1, 1966.
John enjoyed traveling, skiing, and studying fine wines. Dr. Immel’s quest of knowledge kept him reading and studying a wide range of topics. He and his wife were staunch fans of Bay Area sports teams, particularly the Oakland Raiders for whom they had season tickets since the 1960’s.
John is survived by his loving wife, Roberta (Bobby) Turner Immel; four cousins, Michael Willis, St. Louis, Missouri, Kristin Cox, Austin, TX; Stephen Willis, Taos, New Mexico, and Rodger West, Nashville, Tennessee.
A Viewing will be held, Thursday, November 9 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm in the Julia Morgan Chapel at the Chapel of the Chimes, 4499 Piedmont Avenue, Oakland, CA 94611. Funeral Service will follow at 1:00 pm. A Memorial Contribution may be made in Dr. Immel’s Memory to the Parkinson Foundation.
