Ian Hay Falconer's Obituary
Ian Hay Falconer passed away peacefully on April 27, 2025, at the age of 87. He was born in Montevideo, Uruguay to Sidney and Dorothy Falconer. Ian was educated in England and graduated from Bristol University, then earned a Master’s degree from Brandeis University. While in Waltham, MA, he met Constance Culler. They married in 1961 and soon began a family, raising two sons, Glen and Quentin.
Ian began his career as an English teacher at Saint Paul’s School (NH) and then for five years at Woodberry Forest School (VA) where he also ran the drama program and coached varsity soccer. Seeking a career change, Ian earned an MBA from the Darden School at the University of Virginia where he also served as a coach of UVA’s championship men’s soccer team. He became a naturalized U.S. citizen in a ceremony at Monticello on July 4, 1970.
After business school, the Falconer family settled in Atlanta, GA where Ian held several finance positions before joining Coopers & Lybrand as a management consultant. His work took the family to Jakarta, Indonesia where Ian and Constance spent seven years enjoying expatriate life and traveling extensively. They returned to Atlanta in 1986, and Ian went on to establish his own accounting and consulting firm.
Over the next two decades, Ian and Constance embraced Atlanta’s vibrant arts and cultural scene. After Ian sold his business, they had more time to travel and live part-time in Honolulu. In 2008, Ian fulfilled a long-held dream by earning a Master’s in East Asian Studies from the University of Hawaii. While at UH, he also performed leading roles in university theater productions. In 2012, Ian and Constance moved to Big Canoe, GA where they built their dream home in the mountains.
Ian had a keen intellect and sharp wit. He amazed all with his knowledge and insightful perspectives on virtually any subject. With their abundance of energy, both Ian and Constance had no inhibitions being the center of the party, dancing and reveling in the moment. True soulmates, Ian and Constance shared a life full of adventure and delighted in new discoveries.
Ian was predeceased by his wife Constance and son Glen. He is survived by his brother Brian, sister-in-law Jo, son Quentin, daughter-in-law Yuko, and two grandsons, Colin and Evan. There will be a Celebration of Life remembrance for Ian in Lexington, MA and London, details to be posted soon.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Glen Hay Falconer Foundation (www.glenfalconerfoundation.com) which will be earmarked in Ian, Constance and Glen’s memory for a planned educational scholarship for deserving craft brewers from the Southeast.
