Giles B Cropsey's Obituary
Giles Burrett Cropsey
Oakland,CA
Giles (Bud) Cropsey, Jr. passed away on September 14, 2022 in Oakland, his forever hometown.
He reached the remarkable age of 111 years. The oldest man in California. Bud came into this world on September 4, 1911. He grew up exploring the hills of his beloved city with his late brothers, Myron and Errol. His parents were Giles and Anna Cropsey. After graduating from Roosevelt High School, Bud commuted to Marin College where he met his wife to be, Marie Cassetta. Together they raised three children. Marie died in 1999. Bud transferred to UC Berkeley, where he attained his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in business. He would later pass the CPA exam. For the next 40 years Bud was a successful CPA and became a partner at John F. Forbes & Co, a firm in San Francisco. Retirement was simply a shift in careers for Bud. He owned and operated a 116 acre walnut ranch in Live Oak at the base of the Sutter Buttes for 30 years. He also was instrumental in reviving the Oakland Symphony as Treasurer and by donating a large endowment that kept the Symphony viable. His love of classical music also extended to many hours of teaching countless young children how to play the piano. Bud was a man of the world, travelling extensively and making many life long friends on the journeys. He also helped to settle, encourage and support three generations of a family that fled Vietnam. They are now flourishing and were very much a part of his life. Bud was very much a family man. He is survived by his daughter Janet Cropsey, Beaverton, OR, Duane Cropsey (Ann) Lodi, CA and Damon Cropsey (Ann) of Redding, CA. He also has many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. The Cropsey family appreciates the care our father received at Sunrise Assisted Living on Skyline Blvd. in Oakland. The family and especially Bud Cropsey would appreciate donations be sent to The Oakland East Bay Symphony in his name. A Celebration of Life will be held Thursday, October 6, 2022 at 1:00pm at The Chapel of the Chimes, Julia Morgan Wing, 4499 Piedmont Avenue, Oakland, CA
