Edgar V. Chloupek's Obituary
Edgar Vincent Chloupek passed away on February 7, 2011. The son of Edgar Amos and Alice Maude Bennett Chloupek, and the brother of the late Jane Frances Chloupek Klein, Edgar was born in Oakland, California on July 13, 1919. Edgar was raised in the Rockridge District of Oakland where he graduated from Oakland Technical High School in 1938. He continued his education at Lick Wilmerding College in San Francisco and received his associates degree in Electrical Engineering. He then began his life long career as an electrician, recently receiving his 70-year membership pin from the I.B.E.W. Local # 595. In January of 1941, in response to the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Edgar enlisted in the Army, served 3 years 9 months and 15 days in the Pacific theater in the Signal Corps as a Technical Sergeant, and received the Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with Bronze Star, and Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal before his discharge into the Oakland community. Shortly thereafter, he joined his father to work at California Electric Company.Part of this time he was stationed in Australia, where he met the love of his life, Dorothy Joan Bain. Some time thereafter, Joan accepted his offer of marriage, relocated by ship to Oakland, where, after marrying at St Clement's on June 7, 1947, they lived together until her death on January 20, 2004. They raised 2 sons, Graham and Randall. They were happy and proud to see both sons marry and have families of their own. Graham and Patrice have 2 children, Nicholas and Shannon. Randy and Carol have 3 children, Debbie, Sherry, and Douglas.Edgar was a long time member of St. John's Episcopal Church of Montclair and of St. Clement's Episcopal Church of Berkeley. A communion memorial service will be held in Edgar's memory on Saturday, February 26th at 11:30 am at St. Clement's Episcopal Church, 2837 Claremont Blvd. Berkeley, CA 94705. All are invited to attend where we can share our memories of this remarkable man's life before, during and after the service.
