Delmar C. Sanders, M.D.'s Obituary
Delmar C. Sanders, M.D., 68, of Berkeley, California, peacefully passed away Wednesday, August 19, 2015, at home surrounded by family.
Dr. Sanders was born on July 24, 1947, in Jackson, Mississippi, the son of late Thomas Roosevelt and Herdesena Moman Sanders. He was the youngest of 4 siblings.
Dr. Sanders attended Simmons High School in Hollandale, Mississippi. He completed his undergraduate studies and medical school at Indiana University. He did his internship at University of Southern California and his neurosurgery residency at Loma Linda University School in California. Dr. Sanders had a private medical practice in Oakland, CA and provided care at several local hospitals. He was on the staff at the University of California at San Francisco. Upon closing his private practice after serving the Bay Area for over 25 years, Dr. Sanders pursued a career as a locum tenens neurosurgeon and practiced in California, Mississippi, Georgia, Washington, Missouri, and Wisconsin. He also was a dedicated member of the Sinkler Miller Medical Association.
Dr. Sanders was a prominent surgeon in the Oakland/San Francisco Bay Area, who touched the lives of many in the community. He treated thousands of patients and served as a teacher and mentor to many physicians. He always stressed “diagnosis before treatment.”
Dr. Sanders is survived by his loving partner, Catherine Matthews, his two daughters, Illona Sanders and Inga Sanders-Marcereau (Rob), his brother Howard Sanders, Sr. (Gwen), his sister Rose White (Ellis), his grandchildren Adrian and Alexis Banks and the Marcereau twins (due November 2015), and many loving cousins, nieces, and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Harvey Sanders, M.D.
A private memorial will be held in Oakland, CA.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to a scholarship fund that has been established by his family in honor of Dr. Sanders.
