Russell Pouncy, 89, was born and raised in Westmoreland, California on December 28, 1928. Throughout his life's adventures, Russell was forever the devoted Husband, Brother, Father, Grandfather and Great-Grandfather. In a family of twelve children, he was the third born to David Pouncy and Lessie Mae Wade, both of Texas. Russell departed this life on September 27, 2018 at the Mercy Hospice Center in Oakland. As a very confident, hard working and highly motivated individual, Russell would later spend his working years in the Army, Coast Guard, and real estate. After graduating from McClymonds High School, he entered into the Army at the young age of seventeen and served as a Wench Operator in Guam during World War II. After his honorable discharge from the Army, he volunteered for the United States Coast Guard and entered into communications school in Groton, Connecticut. Upon graduation, Russell returned to California where he served above mard several different Coast Guard ships, to include the USCGC Iroquois (WHEC-43), a high-endurance icebreaker ship and the USCGC Storis (W-38) which was one of the four vessels to circumnavigate the NorthWest Passage through the Artic Ocean. Russell Pouncy was stationed in the 12th Coast Guard District for most of his career. In 1965, he was stationed at the Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, D.C. where he was promoted to Warrant Officer. Upon returning to California, he was selected to be an AMVER Officer for foreign merchant vessels that visited Northern California ports. In 1971, he was transferred to the Coast Guard radio station in Long Beach, as an Executive Officer. After serving in that capacity, he was promoted to Commanding Officer in 1975 until his retirement in 1976. Mr. Pouncy later joined the Valva Realty Company and the Oakland Realty Board as a salesman. After a successful 20-year career in real estate, Russell retired in 1996. Russell was preceded in death by his loving wife of 64 years, Juanita Jean Sullivan Pouncy, and his adoring son Russell Tyrone Pouncy and Great-Granddaughter Milah Graham. His parents, two sisters Catherine, LaVergne and his brothers Leslie and Arnold. Russell leaves behind his loving daughters Dolores Jean (Michael Hudson) Pouncy, Brenda Kay (Jerrell) Lewis, both of Oakland, California and Marva Denise (Tarrance) Williams of Batesburg, South Carolina. His daughter-in-law Darlene Pouncy of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. His Grandchildren Nikkole (Jermaine) Tarver, Sherrell Lewis, Matthew Hudson, Candace Hudson, all of Oakland, California, Russell T. (Kenya) Pouncy, Janayah (Eddie) Graham, Olivia Pouncy, all of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Adrienne (Richard) Johnson and Shannon Williams, both of Upper Marlboro, Maryland. His great-grandchildren Kendal, Jaden, Eric, Joshua, Leah, Logan, Rowan of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Ailee of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, Kyle, Zoey, Jerney, and Jamil of Oakland, California. Three sisters Eunice Blount, Joyce Brown, Gloria Lawrence ,Three brothers Ronald Hull, Stanley Hull, Glenn Hull. And a host of in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Russell Pouncy left an indelible mark on all those who came in contact with him through his goodness and kindness! He will always live in our hearts and mind.
