William "Bill" P. Lew's Obituary
William “Bill” P. Lew, devoted husband and loving father, passed away peacefully on May 1, 2014 at the age of 91.
Bill was born December 13, 1922, the only child born to Anne and Albert Fong. His father died when he was very young. His mother worked long hours and placed Bill in the care of a retired missionary couple, Mr. and Mrs. Jones, thus becoming one of the “Jones Boys”. He was later re-united with his mother and introduced to his step father, Henry Lew, who adopted him and gave him his surname.
At age fifteen he was encouraged to venture out on his own. To put himself through school he worked as a house boy and later worked at a deli making his way up to short order cook. After earning his bachelor’s degree from Biola College and Whitworth University, he began his career working for the city and county of San Francisco as a Social Worker, progressing to a Juvenile Probation officer and completing his career as a supervisor.
Bill and Eva married in June of 1951 and enjoyed 62+ years of life together. They were blessed with two daughters, Laura and Brenda. In time the family grew to include a son-in-law, Ira Young and three grandchildren Chad, Kristine, and Tyler Young. After retirement he enjoyed traveling with his wife Eva and their friends. Some of the places they visited included Scandinavian Countries, Europe, China, Israel, and Alaska.
Bill loved his Lord and served Him faithfully at the Chinese Independent Baptist Church of Oakland in many capacities: Deacon, Sunday School teacher, Council Chairman, treasurer, and willing helper wherever his services were needed. He was an active participant in the early growth and development of the church both physically and spiritually.
He loved spending time with his family and participating in activities such as miniature golfing, bowling, and playing board games. During his personal time he enjoyed working on crossword puzzles and watching game shows on television.
Family and friends are invited to a celebration of life service on Friday, May 9 at 10:00 am at the Chinese Independent Baptist Church of Oakland. A family visitation hour will be held on Thursday, May 8 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Chapel of the Chimes, 4499 Piedmont Ave., Oakland.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in remembrance of Bill to the Chinese
