William Haney's Obituary
William Stanley Haney Born December 1, 1920, died June 17, 2010, after a healthy and wonderful life. William S. Haney (Bill) was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Sarah Penman Haney and Audley Rex Haney, and moved to Santa Monica, California as a child. He graduated from Santa Monica High school where he was on the tennis team. He attended UCLA until he was drafted in 1942 into the US Army where, after OTS, he became an officer in the Corps of Engineers. He landed in Normandy in June 1944, and his units eventually went to Paris and Antwerp. At the end of the war, he met and married the love of his life, Christina, whom he was married to for 50 years until her death in 1995. After the war, Bill received a Civil Engineering degree from UC Berkeley and embarked on a long career overseas where he remained an expatriate for 45 years, living and working in Europe, Africa and the Middle East, eventually retiring in Greece. Bill had a passion for hunting, particularly enjoying safaris in Southern and Eastern Africa, and pheasant hunting in Eastern Europe. He also had a passion for reading books, drinking wine, listening to music and crossword puzzles. Bill is survived by three sons, William Stanley Haney II (Elpida), living in Dubai; R. Nicholas Haney (Mary), from Piedmont, California; and Steven J. Haney (Frances), living in Munich, Germany. He also is survived by four grandchildren, Justine, 23, and William, 20, living in Greece; and Elizabeth, 16, and Zane, 14, of Piedmont, California. Bill lived in Piedmont and St. Helena, California, during the last years of his life. He was a gentleman of the highest honor and integrity. His company will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. at the Chapel of the Chimes, 4499 Piedmont Ave., Oakland, CA.
