Dear Will,
I first met you many years ago. It was one day when you dialed my phone number, and I answered. It was a brief but memorable call. I was a Spanish tutor by then, and you called me to book some classes with me. At that time, I was living in San Rafael, CA, very close to your office. And I will never forget that in those brief minutes of our conversation, something unusual struck me because of its intensity and clarity: there was a very kind and gentle voice on the other side of the line. I could feel it with great clarity, and I remember that I told my wife about “this very kind person who has called me and will be my new student.”
A few days later we met in person, and the impression was the same. And this is how our friendship began: a loyal friendship that lasted 18 years.
As time went by, I discovered that we had many things in common: our views on life, on family, on spiritual issues (our faith and love for our Lord), on politics, on art, on beauty. Also, each one’s personal history was very similar. Our lives seemed like two mirrors reflecting each other. All of this made our friendship stronger.
The last time we saw each other was two days before your passing, through a screen (me in Peru and you in California), for our usual Spanish lesson. How could I imagine then that it would be the last time I would see you?
I am sad, very sad to think that you are no longer with us. But you will remain in my heart, Will, because people like you are hard to find and hard to forget. Your gentleness, your goodness, your intelligence, your love and your art will live on in our memory.
May all the glory of God be with you, my dear friend.
