Webster Clark Merritt's Obituary
The day before Halloween in the late 50’s, at about 2 pm, Webster Clark Merritt was born in California. He died just before his birthday in October 2022
As a baby, he lived in San Carlos with his parents (Jack and Arlette) and three older siblings. Several years after he was born a younger brother joined the family.
In the 1960’s, the family moved to Burbank, California were they lived until 1969. He attended his early years of school in Burbank, and after the family moved back to Northern California he graduated from Hayward High School in 1977.
He was involved briefly in Cub Scouting and was a member of troop 876 in Hayward.
He was most a peace when he was outdoors. Beginning from the time he was a baby, he enjoyed the family’s outdoor trips, which often included hiking, fishing, backpacking and spending time at the beach. The love of the outdoors and fishing stayed with him the rest of his life, and one of his prize possessions was a mounted large stripped bass caught on one of his fishing trips.
His outdoor adventures would often included camping with his older brother and customizing his Jeep, which was always a source of enjoyment.
His first trips outside the country were as a child when the family would take vacations to Mexico, either staying in motels or sometimes camping, and when he was older he traveled to other countries.
Unlike many, he did not choose a specific career path, perhaps because his interests were so far ranging. They included not only camping and fishing, but also photography, bicycle racing, music, art and especially cooking and baking in which he was extermely creative. He also enjoyed the process of restoration and worked on a variety of items over the years.
He married Lois in 2004 and they made their home in California.
When not struggling with a lifelong battle with depression and addiction he had a great sense of humor and was always willing to absorb some new bit of information.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Arlette Merritt, his sister Hilary Romero and brother Duncan Merritt.
He is survived by his wife Lois Merritt, sister Karen (Jim) Sturgill, brother Daniel Merritt, nephew Nicholas (Jennifer) Merritt and niece Tamara (Phil Gomez) Romero; also family members Steve Bischoff, Agnes Merritt, several aunts and many first and second cousins.
