Wayne Mark's Obituary
WAYNE T.J. MARK (1933-2022)
THE EARLY YEARS
Mr. Wayne Teung Jung Mark (Dad) was born October 16, 1933, in San Francisco, CA, to Shiu Ho Yee (ma-ma) and Hing Gin Mark (yeh-yeh). The family returned to Hong Kong in 1934. While in Hong Kong, he attended Pui Ching Middle School from 1946-1949 where he found lifelong friends. Dad returned to the US in 1949 and graduated Berkeley High in 1953. He then enlisted in the US Army in 1953 and served honorably until discharge in 1956. While in the Army, Dad received the National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal among other honors. After the Army, he attended Armstrong College in Berkeley and graduated 1960 with a bachelor’s in business administration, concentration in accounting.
LIFE AND SERVICE AS A CHRISTIAN
Dad was a devoted Christian, and he passed these beliefs to Mom, son Daniel, and daughter Gilda. Dad was baptized in 1952 by Rev. Chee Wu of the Chinese Independent Baptist Church (CIBC) in San Francisco and Oakland. He spent many hours with Rev. Wu and his family for several years for which he expressed his gratitude. He also served as an itinerant missionary with Rev. Wu through the South during the 1950’s. After being a member of CIBC, he became a member of Chinese Grace Baptist Church (CGBC) in San Francisco. We went to CGBC as a family. Dad served in a leadership capacity at CGBC for many years and was ordained as a deacon there in 1993.
WORK, VFW AND PUI CHING
Dad worked as a cost analyst/accountant for American Can Company (American National Can Company) for 30 years. He was an active member (president 1971-1973) of the Pui Ching Alumni Association, US West Coast. Dad was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) Post 3956, for many years, first serving as a post commander from 1961-1962 and then quartermaster from 1963-2003.
FAMILY
Dad married Mom (Sum Yee-Nor [Eleanor]) December 14, 1962, in Hong Kong. Timothy (August 1963-March 1964) was born followed by Gilda on October 16, 1964. This was
followed by Daniel on January 27, 1969. Dad and Mom lived in Berkeley and Oakland, then settled in San Leandro for many years. Eventually, they moved to Hayward, then Fremont and most recently, Union City.
Dad and Mom enjoyed traveling all over the world on cruises. We also went to Disneyland countless times causing Daniel and Gilda to be Disney-philes (especially Daniel!).
Dad passed away on December 6, 2022, leaving behind wife Eleanor, son Daniel, daughter Gilda, and grandchildren (Cynthia, Koa, Keoni, and Sarah), daughter-in-law Priscilla, son-in-law Ivan, as well as many nieces, nephews, and other family members. Dad was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, sister, and son Timothy.
Lastly, we want to thank the many family members, friends and professionals who have been of assistance during this journey. And thank you for attending this celebration of Dad’s life.
