Walter Bernard Lubas' Obituary
Walter Lubas died today from pneumonia at Alta Bates Hospital in Berkeley.Walter was a very unusual man. He was born in Poland, moved to America and I believe New Jersey was his first stop. He moved to Berkeley. He married an American woman from Kansas. He moved to Berkeley in the 1950's and has lived here ever since. He had 5 sons of whom 2 (Edward and David) died a young age of cancer. One son Richard is in hospice now dying of the same cancer. His sons, George and John and Richard all survive him. He has one grandson, Joseph (son of George and Cindy Lubas).Walter also lost his wife (and mother of all of his sons) to cancer. He remarried and his second wife died of cancer as well all in the space of a few years.I believe all the funerals and his two weddings were held at St. Joseph the Worker. He worded hard for his family and provided for them well.Walter was one of the kindest people you could ever have met. If someone was in trouble and needed help, he would help them without question. It seemed like he helped every poor Polish immigrant in the Bay Area. Many times he was take advantage of because he trusted EVERYONE. He never got a legal paper signed but gave his word and expected others would too (which sadly was not always the case.)He was a great Polish cook and made the best piroshkis and soupsHe was a unique person and definitely fit quite well in Berkeley.Father, just a little info from my perspective of knowing the family about 15 years now I believe.
