Walter J. Gilardi's Obituary
Cherished family man passed away peacefully with Doris, the love of his life, at his side bringing to a close a first date which lasted more than 60 years. His five treasured children, Cheryl, Diane, Donna, Ron, and Gary, their spouses, his 10 grandchildren and adored great granddaughter, cousins, nieces and nephews, and life-long friends are his legacy. Native of Oakland, Walt was preceded in death by his father Joseph, brother Bobby, beloved mother Mary Capra Gilardi Chivers, and stepfather Russ.
Ever the entrepreneur, Walt was a printing pressman in his early years and parlayed his passion for food into two successful family businesses, the Cracker Barrel Deli in Lafayette and Cutting Board Deli in Walnut Creek.
Walt loved nothing more than being surrounded by family engaging in lively dinner conversation. Kind and gentle, Walt shared his interests in reading and learning; particularly anything to do with nature, food, music, and all things Italian. Role model to all, he demonstrated the value of hard work, good morals, being there for one another, and persistent pursuit of dreams. He instilled a sense of wonder at the world in all his children.
It was Walt’s wish that no service be held. Immediate family will celebrate his life at a private gathering at which glasses will be raised to “salute” and “mangiamo!”
Walt, Dad, Grandpa, we’ll be loving you, ALWAYS!
His family gratefully thanks Walt’s care-givers these past months Arnold and Floyd of Hannam Homes for their kindness and devotion, and the Bruns House staff for their compassion and support during his last days.
