What a committed educator to inner city children. I directly benefitted from her professionalism and commitment while having her as my 2nd grade teacher. How lucky I was as an african american little girl to have such a great teacher who looked liked me. It was ironic that I later crossed paths with her daughter while attending SJSU (Flo). I wished I had had another opportunity to let Mrs Jones know the impact she had on me; and apologize for talking so much in class. She earned her crown.

I met Vivian in 1988, after moving to Oakland and joining Elmhurst U.M. Church.She was an “old school” teacher, that many of us grew up with.She and I both earned degrees from HBCU’s, mine was from Lincoln University in Jefferson City, MO and here’s was from Philander Smith College in Little Rock, AR.She was very active at Elmhurst and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc, and enjoyed quilting, an art passed down from her mother.While at Elmhurst, she was very instrumental in establishing scholarships for young people, and in 2016, the church changed the name to the Vivian R. Jones Scholarship.She taught many of us to give back to others, as this is what life is about.
