Virginia Craft Rose's Obituary
Virginia Craft Rose Sept. 6, 1913 – Dec. 26, 2011 Resident of Oakland, CA Virginia Craft Rose, a long-time civic, cultural and educational leader in Oakland, passed away on Dec. 26 at the age of 98 at her home in Oakland. Virginia taught in the Children’s Centers of the Oakland Unified School District for 30 years before retiring in 1974. She was a life member of the NAACP and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. She was active with the YWCA, the United Nations Association, Clausen House and a host of other community organizations and projects. In 1982 she was named Oakland’s Mother of the Year. Virginia is survived by her son, Richard Craft Rose, two daughters, Virginia Rose Niles and Mary Ellen Butler, a niece, Peggy Dammond Preacely, 10 grandchildren, several grandnieces and nephews and numerous great grandchildren and great-grandnieces and nephews. Friends are invited to attend a memorial service at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 14th, at St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church, 29th St. and Telegraph Ave., Oakland. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Virginia’s memory to the church at its mailing address, 525 29th St., Oakland CA 94609.
