Tom was a gift in my life. He served on my doctoral committee and had the misfortune of having to read my handwriting….we got by that and developed one of the first seminars on the history of Afro-American education in America. We remained friends for almost fifty years and whenever I or my wife Carol and I visited the Bay Area we gathered for drinks (his martini skills were unsurpassed!) or meal. We were thrilled that our daughter Rachel became a professional associate who reported on his comings and goings. We remember a man of culture, humor and wonderful moral rectitude. The world needs more Toms, but what a tough act to follow. RIP Tom our friend.
