Tafoo Saechao's Obituary
Tafoo Saechao, beloved husband, father, brother, and community elder, passed away leaving behind a legacy defined by service, resilience, and deep devotion to family and culture. Born in Houakhong, Laos, to Jiemh Nqenc Saechao and Phatfinh Saelee, Tafoo was also lovingly raised by his second mother, Koyfinh Saechao. His early life was shaped by responsibility, tradition, and an unwavering commitment to his people.
In 2014, Tafoo was formally recognized for his service in the Secret War in Laos under the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), a conflict that spanned from 1961 to 1978. His courage and sacrifice during those years reflected the strength of his character. In 1980, he and his wife, Mueyhaw Saelee, immigrated to the United States in search of safety and opportunity. Sixteen years later, in 1996, they proudly became American citizens.
Tafoo dedicated much of his life to uplifting others. He worked for 25 years as a property manager at Lao Family Community Development, where he touched countless lives with his generosity, patience, and steady leadership. Even after retiring, he continued to serve the Mien community, offering his time and knowledge at ceremonies and cultural events.
Nature was one of Tafoo’s greatest joys. He loved camping, fishing, and gathering bamboo, and he found simple happiness in watching nature documentaries and humorous videos on YouTube. He cherished traveling, meeting new people, learning and sharing folklore, and embracing every experience life offered. Above all, Tafoo treasured time with his family, creating memories that will continue to bring comfort and joy to those who loved him.
Tafoo is survived by his devoted wife, Mueyhaw, and their four children: Kaofoo, Mueyfoo, Chunliam and his wife Almae Clarisse, and Farmfoo. He is also survived by his sister, Yien Kwen. He was preceded in death by his brother, Ta Kuang.
The family invites all who knew Tafoo to honor his legacy by sharing their own gifts—whether knowledge, compassion, or service—with their communities. In doing so, we continue the work he valued most: building a better tomorrow with honor and pride.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 5, 2026 at Chapel of the Chimes, Julia Morgan Chapel located on 4499 Piedmont Ave in Oakland. Viewing will be from 11am-12pm, Expression hour will be from 12pm-12:50pm.
The family kindly requests that no flowers be sent during this time.
