Sylvia Ann Haye's Obituary
Sylvia Ann Haye was born in New York City on November 23, 1919. Sylvia passed away in California on August 23, 2011, at the age of 91.Sylvia’s father was William Robert McHugh and her mother Isa Onemia Johnston, both of Trinidad. Sylvia was the middle child of five children; the oldest Clyde, her big sister Beryl, little sister Dorothy and the youngest brother Jackie.Sylvia’s parents and siblings frequently traveled back and forth to Trinidad while Sylvia stayed to fulfill her education in Manhattan public schools and to become a true New Yorker. Sylvia met the love of her life as a child, Clifford S. Haye, a fellow immigrant from the West Indies. Sylvia married Clifford on July 19, 1941, who was serving in the Army as a 1st Lieutenant. Four children were born of this union, Clifford, William, Franklin and Yvette.Sylvia had a successful career working for the government for twenty years, in both the war department and for the IRS. Her husband Clifford encouraged and supported her to obtain a degree. Sylvia made a life-changing decision and in her forties, obtained her Nursing degree and became a RN. Sylvia went on to work for the City Hospitals of New York as an RN administrator before retiring at the age of 55.In retirement, Sylvia and her husband traveled between the Bahamas and Sag Harbor, her second home. In Sag Harbor, she loved to tend to her garden, fish, go crabbing, cook, and was well known for her skills in poker. (Ask anyone that has played a hand against her.)She spent the past 11 years with her daughter Yvette in Oakland, California. In this time, she vacationed with her family in Hawaii, Las Vegas and San Diego among other places, soaking up the West Coast sunshine.Sylvia was predeceased by her husband Clifford and sons William and Franklin Haye. She leaves to mourn and is survived by her son Clifford and daughter Yvette. Eight grandchildren, William Haye, Melanie Haye, Christian Haye, Braxter Timberlake, Christopher Haye and his wife Trinh, Dory Timberlake, Jasmine Haye and Jeanine Timberlake, Daughter in laws Jenelyn and Steva Haye, Cousins Carole and Victor Gellineau and their children and families, as well as a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and many cherished friends.
