Susan Elizabeth Hengl's Obituary
Susan Elizabeth (Hathaway) Hengl
April 7, 1949 – September 13, 2013
Resident of Moraga
Sue passed away peacefully on Friday afternoon in her Moraga home after a decade-long battle with cancer. Family members were by her side during her passing. Sue was born in Oakland, CA and raised in Alameda by her parents, Wood and Gladys Hathaway. She was the eldest of three siblings, brother, Steven Hathaway (Gloria), and sister, Sherry (Hathaway) Birkestrand. A lifelong resident of the Bay Area, Sue received her BA and teaching credential from San Francisco State University and went on to work in various business settings in Oakland, CA. It was during her two years at Scott Company that she met her future husband of 37 years, Larry Hengl, and her three stepsons, Michael (Betty), Larry (Deborah), and Dustin. Soon after, she bought a flower shop on Grande Avenue in Oakland, which she ran for two years, and then eventually joined the Clorox Corporation, where she had a managing role in exports. Sue and Larry settled down in Orinda, CA, where they raised their two sons, Nicholas and Andrew.
Sue was a wonderful and devoted mother, wife, grandma, aunt, and friend. She loved spending time with her family, quilting, walking with friends, playing with her dog, Rudy, and always enjoyed hearty social gatherings. She will be sorely missed and forever remembered in our hearts.
She is survived by her husband, two siblings, two sons and three step sons, four grandchildren, and a veritable army of nieces and nephews—and, of course, her beloved Goldendoodle, Rudy.
A celebration of her life will be held Monday, September 23rd at 12:00 PM at Grand View Pavilion in Alameda (300 Island Drive, Alameda, CA 94502).
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Hospice of the East Bay or a cancer charity of your choice.
