Stephen C. Black's Obituary
Stephen C. Black 1933-2012 Resident of Berkeley, CA Professor of Education – English Oakland Unified School District Stephen Carl Black, retired English Professor, died May 22, 2012, at his home in Berkeley, California. Stephen devoted himself to lifelong scholarly study of how a child’s intellectual and emotional growth depends on developing full possession of language. He was equally concerned about the role and study of literature in their social and cultural life of a democracy society. Throughout his career, Stephen maintained a deep interest and an intense involvement in English teacher education and its professional association. As an active participant in Curriculum Study Commission of the Central California Council of Teachers of English, he, fifteen years, encouraged teachers to attend annual Asilomar English Conference, which had never been done. We will remember Stephen for his wisdom: professional meetings, essay readings at Princeton University, his moving readings of literature. He stirred the imagination of his audiences, especially his family, with his memorable stories, his good sense of humor, and his passionate words on behalf of literature, teachers, travels and children. Viewing services will be May 29 at Chapel of the Chimes in Oakland from 4 to 8 pm. Funeral services will be on May 30 at 11 am at Taylor Memorial Church in Oakland.
