Sonia Yeung's Obituary
Sonia Yeung, born in China in 1951 to Tun Wong (father) and Chow Ling Ng (mother),
embarked on a 50 day life changing journey that led her from Hong Kong to Brazil in
1959, and eventually to Canada in 1969. Alongside her beloved siblings Celia, Patricia,
Rosa, and Cristina settled in Canada, where she embraced every moment to the fullest.
Her adventurous spirit and love for the sun brought her to Los Angeles, Ca, during a
family vacation in 1974. There, she found her new home, married in 1978, and
welcomed her cherished daughter, Melanie. Sonia’s entrepreneurial spirit thrived as she
achieved great success in owning and managing multiple small businesses. Sonia's
zest for life shone brightly through the simplest joys – sharing meals and conversations
with friends and family, leaving a profound and positive impact on those around her.
John Chung-Yung Pau was born in Hong Kong in 1933. He was the ninth of 11 children
and the only surviving son of his parents Pau Siu-Yu (father) and Tsang Lai-Hing
(mother). John immigrated to America in his 20s, living in Texas, Seattle and ultimately
the Bay Area where he studied Structural Engineering at Stanford University. He took
pride in being a self-made man who raised himself from humble beginnings to having a
successful career and raising a family. John relished the simple pleasures in life,
including spending time with friends and dining at new restaurants.
Sonia and John married in 1995 in the Bay Area. Together they realized they shared a
passion for karaoke and ballroom dancing, forming a close knit community in both San
Francisco and Oakland. Their presence was known and cherished by many in their
communities. In their later years, they enjoyed taking long daily walks along the
shoreline in Alameda, frequently visiting local businesses and community events.
Sonia bid farewell to this world with her daughter, Melanie, beside her on July 6, 2023 in
Oakland, CA at the age of 72. Sonia is survived by her daughter and her grandchildren,
Angelisa, Marcello, and Allison.
John passed into Eternal Life and met Sonia in heaven at the age of 89 in Castro Valley
on July 21, 2023 while surrounded by his children. John is survived by his children,
Vincent, Katharine, Stephanie; and grandchildren Michael, Elle, and Brandon.
The memorial service for Sonia and John will take place at 2-6 pm on Friday, August 11
at Chapel of the Chimes, 4499 Piedmont Avenue, Oakland. The service concludes with a
5 pm prayer service.
