Mr. Subhashish Sengupta's Obituary
Subhashish Sengupta was born on September 1, 1963, in New Delhi, India, to the parents of Prasun and Sipra Sengupta, and passed away on September 29, 2015, as a resident of Vallejo, California. As a boy he was inquisitive, full of energy, life, and at times a bit mischievous. He loved to take apart toys to see how they were built – a budding mechanical engineer. He grew into a young man who valued family, integrity, hard work, and following your dreams.
Subhashish’s father worked for the United Nations as a government Statistical
Advisor, traveling all around the world. He grew up in India, Iran, Indonesia, and Switzerland, spending summer vacations traveling all through South East Asia, parts of Europe, and India. With such an international exposure during his childhood, he grew up to have an appreciation of different cultures, religions, and ethnicities, and learned to play pranks in different languages.
In early 1979, he and his family came to visit his maternal aunt, uncle and daughter, the Dasguptas, in Harrisburg, PA, where they stayed for several months and had their first experience of American life, including fleeing from the Three Mile Island nuclear reactor meltdown. During this time, his uncle convinced his father to pursue his childhood dream of a PhD, which lead to his father being admitted to UC Berkeley (UCB). While living in UC Berkeley Student Housing in Albany, CA, Subhashish completed high school in the French American Bilingual
School (F.A.B.S.), in San Francisco. His parents valued education and wanted Subhashish and his sister to have full opportunities to enter any college in the world with an International Baccalaureate from F.A.B.S.
After completing 2 years at Contra Costa College, Subhashish set his sights on UC
Berkeley, where he studied and received his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Mechanical Engineering. He was on the Dean’s list for two consecutive years and also received various honors. In fact, Subhashish and his father set a precedence of two generations simultaneously attending UCB. While attending graduate school at UCB, he meet his wife, Valerie Hill. They married on April 10, 1993 and five years later on July 5, 1998, their daughter Ruchika Sengupta was born.
Subhashish was a family man who strongly loved, cared, and provided for his wife and daughter. He had a strong sense of right and wrong, believed in fighting for the truth, respect, honor, and pursuing his dreams. He strongly believed that good things came to those who are honest, good, and self-sacrificing. He was a man with a kind heart and always had a lovable smile.
As Director of R&D and Engineering, Subhashish’s job required him to travel back and forth from Singapore and Malaysia for the past 6 months prior to his death. He came back from his last business trip on March 28, 2015 and fell severely ill from an unknown virus which lead to A.R.D.S and various other complications over the last five months. On Tuesday, September 29, 2015 at 12:20 a.m. he expired and was released into God’s hands. He will be deeply missed by his wife, daughter, sister, mother, family members and friends. His father predeceased him.
Subhashish Sengupta’s memorial services will be held on Wednesday, October 7, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. located at Chapel of the Chimes, 4499 Piedmont Avenue, Oakland, California in the Julia Morgan Chapel.
