Seen Y.C. Siu's Obituary
It’s with great sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Seen YC Siu.
At the age of 84, she passed peacefully in her sleep on Thursday April 27 at home in Oakland. Born on July 23, 1938 in Yuen Fung Heung Village, ChungShan, Kwangtung (Canton), China. She was the beloved only child of Chui Siu Nam and Chan Suk Lin.
Seen attended Yuen Fung Primary School in ChungShan, China from 1949-1955.
She married Siu Tak Won (Dickey T Siu) on January 14th 1958 and immediately moved to Hong Kong for employment opportunities.
During the next 14 years in Kowloon, Hong Kong, Seen YC Siu, became a professional seamstress while giving birth to 5 children and managing an ever growing household of relatives. The family moved to the United States on April 11,1969 to join her father-in-law, Siu Hoy Low, in San Francisco. The family decided to settle across the bay in Oakland shortly after arriving in the United States.
In Oakland, Seen worked as a Master seamstress from home while managing the household and caring for her 6 children, opened and ran Hon Hing Market and Phoenix Restaurant.
Seen enjoyed her retirement years preparing elaborate multi-course meals for family and friends during all holidays and celebrations. Her most prized moments were time spent with her family laughing and eating together. She will always be remembered for creating those memories for all those who had the fortune to know her.
Seen YC Siu was predeceased by her husband, Siu Tak Won and survived by her six children: Harold Siu, Mary Siu-Wong and Matthew Wong (son-in-law), Henry Siu, ManLee Siu and Ed Suarez (son-in-law), Shirley Siu-Rhee and David Rhee (son-in-law) and Cindy Siu and Jason Zuur (son-in-law); grandchildren Amanda and Rachel Wong, Joshua and Evan Rhee and Samatha and Bryson Zuur.
