Saythong Vongphachanh's Obituary
Saythong Vongphachanh, 67, was born on August 9, 1952 in Vientiane, Laos to Koy Vongphachanh (father) and Ounheaun Phommachanh (mother). He met then married Bounheuang Phimphanh in December of 1976. In January of 1981, they, along with their two children escaped Laos in pursuit of a better life. They found refuge in Thailand before relocating to the Philippines in November of 1984. Their quest led them to Lynn, Massachusetts on November 30, 1985. They eventually settled in Berkeley, California in April of 1986 until the late 1990's when they moved to Oakland, California.
Saythong studied and received his automotive technology cerificate at the College of Alameda, however, his passion was cooking. He was a devoted Bhuddist and was a member of the Bay Area Lao Association and the Lao and Art Culture of Oakland. In December of 2015, Saythong remarried and is survived by his wife, Phoungeune Khammy; his five children, Chanthasone, Syvilai, Sonesai, Sandy and Johnny; his sisters, Douangchanh Lokaphone and Kongkeo Phommachanh; his brother, Khammai Phommachanh; his grandchildren, Kaysone, Kaylanah, Kayden, Lexxon, Zoey, Kayleigh, Alivia, Kory and Logan.
Saythong was diagnosed with multiple myeloma cancer in June of 2018. He underwent multiple rounds of chemotherapy. The medication took a toll on his body and he became frail. Despite it all, he remained positive. Saythong passed on April 3, 2020 from a head injury resulting in a subdermal hematoma. Funeral service will be held on April 10, 2020 at 10:00am at Chapel of the Chimes in Oakland.
