Ronald Lok's Obituary
Ron was born August 18, 1951 to Jack and Jean Lok of San Francisco, California. He was raised in San Francisco with his siblings Suzanne, Randall, and Steven. While growing up, Ron had severe asthma and spent a year and a half in Denver at the Children’s Asthma Research Institute and Hospital for treatment that aided him throughout his life.
Ron began practicing karate at the Chinatown YMCA – a passion he continued until the end of his life. He graduated from Galileo High School and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a degree in engineering. After college he joined the Bechtel Group as an engineer and met his future wife Patricia. He traveled the world with his friends participating in karate tournaments in his early adult life. After several years of dating, Ron and Patty decided to get married and start a family. Ron and Patty married in 1980 and bought a house in San Francisco. They had their first child, Brian, in 1982 and their second child, Evan, in 1986. With a young family, Ronald and Patty decided to move suburbs and in 1988, packed up their children and moved to Orinda, CA where both of their children would grow up and graduate from high school. The next 17 years were a whirlwind of activity. Ronald discovered his second passion, cycling, watched his children graduate high school, started a new job with the State of California leaving Bechtel after 28 years, adopted his first Boston Terrier Inky, and continued to travel the world again. In 2006, Ronald and Patricia decided to leave Orinda for Oakland and remodeled their home in the Rockridge neighborhood. As the years moved on, Ron continued to practice karate, ride his bicycle, adopted his second Boston Terrier, Kiwi, and watched his oldest son get married.
By 2015 Ron decided that it was time to retire with encouragement from his wife Patty who had retired a few years earlier. Ron left the State of California and retired full time. The next three years were some of the best of Ron’s life. He was able to ride his bicycle every day, practice karate, and travel on “once in lifetime” trips twice a year. Sadly it was not to last. While riding his bicycle, Ron suffered a cardiac arrest.
Ronald Lok passed away on October 21st, 2018 with his family by his side; he was 67 years old.
