I'm a late arrival here as I only recently learned of Rod's passing, something that would have made Rod smile in that wicked way of his. He knew punctuality was not one of my strengths. Rod and I worked together on 2002-2005 teaching English in Saigon, first at SEAMEO then at RMIT. We shared a class of Red Cross workers, doctors, nurses and admin staff, that he simply loved. Rod was patient and good humoured and much liked and respected, so those classes were something we'd look forward to. Rod spoke fluent Vietnamese and had a love of Vietnamese people and culture, so going out and about with him was always a pleasure. Rod was an outstanding example of how former combatants can become friends and, especially now, the world can learn from this. I'm deeply saddened that we've lost him, but I will treasure the memories of my time with Rod as one of the best times of my life. My deepest sympathy to his family and friends.
'G'day mate!' as you used to say to me, or maybe it's now, Cheers old friend.
