Robert E Harpster's Obituary
Robert Eugene Harpster, age 83, passed away quietly in his sleep on March 8, 2014. Born in Olney, Illinois, September 25, 1930, Robert is survived by his wife, Carol Harpster, daughter, Charla Britt, son-in-law, Robert Bluth, and grand-daughters, Tesseira and Gwenelle. Robert Harpster was a certified engineering geologist, graduating from Beloit College and receiving a Masters degree at University of Texas, Austin. Before graduate school he served in the Army Corps of Engineers, in Washington, D.C. He worked for the State of California for 17 years on the California Adequate system before joining Woodward Clyde Consultants, in San Francisco. As a Vice President for Woodward Clyde, he worked on different projects in countries around the world – including, Costa Rica, India, Greece, Libya, and Venezuela. He was a Fellow of the Geological Society of America, and had an encyclopedic-like knowledge of geology. He was an avid reader and widely traveled, including a trip to Antarctica in 2000 (where he plunged into 31 degree waters for a “swim”). He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, ever-supportive, loving, and well-meaning. A memorial service is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on April 5th in the Julia Morgan Hall at the Chapel of the Chimes in Oakland, CA. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that tax-deductible donations be made to Monterey Bay Charter School in honor of Robert Harpster.
