Robert Edmund Gardner's Obituary
Robert Edmund Gardner, affectionately known as "Bob," passed away in Oakland, California, on February 5th, 2026, at the age of 83.
A proud Oakland resident for more than 50 years, Bob built a life rooted in family, community, and service. Born in Kansas City, Kansas, to Luetta Thompkins, Robert was lovingly raised by his aunt and uncle, Elizabeth and Archie Patton. In 1945, the family relocated to Fresno, California, where he graduated from Edison High School in 1960.
Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served honorably until 1964. Robert later became a proud Mason, joining the Mount Sinai Consistory No. 303 of Fresno, California, and advancing to the Prince Hall Masonic Scottish Rite in 1973.
In 1977, he began a long career in HR Administration at the Port of Oakland, where his dedication and work ethic carried him through to his retirement in July 2004. A man of many passions, Robert found joy in capturing life through the lens of his camera, the fire of his stove, and the sanctuary of his garden.
His green thumb often bore delicious fruits and vegetables that frequently made their way from the garden to the dinner table, filling his chest with great pride and his body with nourishment, giving literal meaning to enjoying the fruits of his labor. Robert also had a lifelong love of sports, with a deep affinity for football, baseball, and basketball, appreciating the camaraderie and spirited competition that defined every game.
Equally enduring was his lifelong love of learning. In the mid-1990s, he attended St. Mary's College, coming within a semester of completing his degree, a testament to his continued pursuit of knowledge and deep curiosity of life. Above all, Robert had an incredible gift for laughter. He loved to laugh and had a special way of making others laugh, bringing joy and warmth to everyone around him.
His infectious humor and warm smile left a lasting impact on all who crossed his path. Robert also experienced love and companionship throughout his life, marrying three times, each chapter reflecting his belief in family and partnership. He leaves behind his cherished children, Darrell Gardner, Denesha Gardner, and Marcus Gardner; his beloved grandchildren, Lindsay, Brianna, Teya, Moses and Najee Gardner; and his great-grandchildren, who will continue to carry his legacy forward.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Luetta Thompkins; his aunt and uncle, Elizabeth and Archie Patton; and his brother, Daniel Gardner. Robert's life was a beautiful tapestry woven from service, resilience, creativity, love, and laughter. His memory will forever live on in the hearts of those he touched and the family he held dear.
