I met Richard in high school. He was a great guy and a lifetime friend. We formed a big band (briefly) which appeared at the Sacramento City a college jazz festival.played Shiny Stockings and Rich's arrangement of Beginnings.I spent quite a few weekends at his house eating his moms cooking and listening to everything from Don Ellis to BS&T. Even got him to A Chase concert once.We also played together in Algo Logo along with his younger brother David. Dave was a fine and sometimes outrageous trombone soloist.I reconnected with him frequently at first and sporadically after moving to the Midwest. Even after not seeing Rich for several years he was always willing to get together for a meal and a good round of movie reviews.What a great friend!

Richard volunteered at the homeless shelter where I worked. He was extremely dedicated and such an incredible asset to the team. He was compassionate and kind to everyone he met. I have no idea what they are doing without him. Personally, I was so lucky to have met Richard. He was hilarious and intelligent and always brightened my day. We swapped movies back and forth and he introduced me to some great genres. I will miss you Richard!

I use to walk to David Lubin Elementary School with Richard and Mike Seto. All three of us were in the band together, all the way through high school. Over the years Iâ??ve try to locate him. Lost touch with Richard a couple of decades ago. I remember his father passing away when we were in Kindergarten. We use to walk to school with Gary Fong in elementary school. We made lots of music together as we played in band all the way through Sacramento High School. He loved Don Ellis, political discussion and MAD Magazine in those days puffing on a pipe as he spoke. Sorry, old friend, I found you too late to have a reunion. Rest in peace, Rich!!

Richard loved his work first and foremost, but watching movies came in a close second. I hope he's in the Great Beyond chatting it up with the likes of Pauline Kael, Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert. He may have come across to some as gruff and bearlike, but one only had to see the Hello Kitty knick-knacks on his desk to understand his true nature.
