Phoebe Joyce Bruce's Obituary
Phoebe Joyce Bruce, 79, of San Mateo, passed away in her home on August 10, 2017, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Clovis, New Mexico on January 30, 1938, daughter to Homer and Reba Martin. Phoebe graduated from Menlo Atherton High School in June 1956 and married her high school sweetheart, Brad Steiger, soon after on July 22nd. She was primarily a homemaker, but briefly worked outside the home later in life when her kids were older. She and Brad were married for 41 years until his early passing at 61 years of age. On September 1, 2001 Phoebe married Dr. Gene K. Bruce and moved to San Mateo where they lived for almost 16 years together until her passing. She was a member of Peninsula Covenant Church since the early 70’s and was involved in many volunteer and mentoring activities throughout the years. She loved playing volleyball as a youth, tennis, family camping, and water skiing as an adult, and traveling abroad in her golden years.
She is survived by her loving husband Gene, daughter Susan, her husband Stephen Lipscomb, grandchildren Ryan and Lacey, and great grandchildren Faith, Ayla, Sunny, and Avery; son Jeffrey and grandchildren Athreya and Nisha; son Gregory, his wife Mia, and grandchildren Kerstin, Megan, and Bennett; Gene’s son Paul and grandson Kaylan; son Rick, his wife Nancy, and grandsons Ryan, Alex, and David; sister Phyllis Trip, brother Gary Martin, and nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents, first husband Brad Steiger, and her brother Cary Martin.
A memorial service honoring the life of Phoebe will be held at 1:00 PM, August 26th, at Peninsula Covenant Church located at 3560 Farm Hill Blvd, Redwood City, California. A reception will follow at the Fellowship Hall. Her place of inurnent is the Chapel of Chimes, Oakland, California.
