I was stunned last week to hear about Phil's passing. Phil was our brother at Theta Xi at UC Davis, and as you all have described on this Tribute Wall, he was a genuine, caring and loyal friend. Those of us who lived with him a short time at UCD are so much better for having known Phil. Two memories I have of Phil were him offering to teach me how to drive a stick shift on the backroads of Davis with his gold Corvair (the Trilobite). We/I bucked that car all afternoon and I never got the feel for the clutch. Phil, of course laughed and enjoyed the adventure that afternoon even while putting his car at risk in my hands. The other classic memory of Phil is any weeknight you could find him doing 200 pushups between two chairs while watching Johnny Carson. I miss Phil, and I cannot imagine the sense of loss that you, Carol, Caitlin, Olivia, and the extended family have. I will just cherish the time we had together, and keep his wonderful smile and voice in my memory.God bless you, Phil! and may God bless and keep the family in His hands.
Thank you to all who have contributed to the wall – it's a wonderful testament to his character and a life well lived. Our family has compiled a tribute to his life, which can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-X4i60s8cE&feature=youtu.beLove to all,Carol, Caitlin and Olivia
As a younger brother-in-law to Phil's sister Janet, I've known Phil since Janet and my brother married decades ago. Phil always personified a true gentleman to me. A strong and athletic big man with a big heart and laugh when I first met him. Always smiling, gracious and kind. Later a successful businessman, husband and father. The type of guy who was always truly interested whenever he asked how you were doing. Men like this, role models to the rest of us, are too few and far between in today's world. As such, there loss is deeply felt and affects many. He will be missed greatly and remembered fondly by all who knew him.
Carol & Family,It was my privilege to have been a colleague of Phil's. He was a true gentleman and I will always remember his kindness and support for me.Respectfully,Allan & Chris Mills
I will always remember Phil as a kind and loving soul. He brought humor, friendship and empathy to our fraternity. He was the ultimate gentleman, athlete and brother. My deepest condolences to Phil's family.Sincerely,Howard Given

Phil's charismatic and energetic personality was truly uplifting to anyone who had the pleasure to be associated with him. His smile and positive attitude on life were inspirations to all. From the time we met in Davis, I was happy to call him a friend and brother. Our heartfelt condolences go out to all of Phil's family at this time.Craig and Vicki Beatty
