Peter Yu-Liang Hsi's Obituary
Peter Yu-Liang Hsi, 81, a resident of Piedmont, California, died peacefully at his daughter’s home in Los Altos, California. He was born on November 11, 1932, in Hankow, China, to Teh Kwei Hsi and Wen Chung Chang Hsi. He had two older brothers, Walter Hsi and John Hsi.
Peter began his career working in the shipyard. His hard work and intellect were quickly recognized and he was sent to England to get his technical degree as a naval architect. In two years, he finished his studies, passed the exam, and returned to Hong Kong.
In Hong Kong, Peter rose to be the Technical Director of World-Wide Shipping. Peter was introduced to his wife by Sir Y.K. Pao, his boss at World-Wide Shipping. Then in 1978, Peter with his young family immigrated to the United States. In 1981, shortly after China instituted its Open Door Policy, Peter saw the opportunity and worked as an independent consultant to help China build its first cargo ship for export, the “Regent Tampopo.”
Peter loved fishing and the water. He shared his love of fishing with family and friends, out in the Pacific Ocean and at Lafayette Reservoir. His love of the sea even inspired him to learn swimming at age 40.
Peter is survived by his brother John Hsi, his wife Stella Hsi, his beloved daughters Linda Hsi (David Deatherage) of Los Altos, California, and Petrina Hsi (Michael Robertson) of Westlake Village, California. He is also the dear grandfather to Amy Deatherage, Christopher Robertson, and Kaylyn Robertson.
Peter’s memorial service will be held at Chapel of the Chimes, 4499 Piedmont Avenue, Oakland, at 11am on Saturday February 8, 2014, followed by a private burial.
In Lieu of flowers, please send contributions to the Peter Y. Hsi Memorial Fund.
The family plans to donate memorial contributions towards a bench in his honor at Lafayette Reservoir.
