Peggy Low's Obituary
Peggy (Sum) Low, 91, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 25, 2018, at her home in San Lorenzo, with her husband and three daughters by her side. Her family will forever remember her sharp mind, graciousness, and loving welcomes she gave to those attending the family events she meticulously planned and hosted. She leaves behind her husband of 68 years, Norman, and her three daughters and their spouses, Sharon (Edwin) Fong, Ginger Gimenez (Leo Castro), and Cindy (Paul) Johnson, her grandchildren and their spouses Dennis Fong, Michelle Young (Brandon), Kenji Iwahashi (Miloe Nano) , Jenny Patague (Larry) and Hui-Hui Johnson, and great grandson, Jaden Young, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Preceding her in death are her parents, Issac and Enid (Chan) Sum, and three sisters, Bernice Lee, Billie Jeung, and Elaine Yoshioka.
Peggy was a hard worker her entire life. In her early years, she worked at her parents’ grocery store, Ike’s Fine Foods, on 16th Street in Oakland. After marrying Norman and having their family, she stayed home to raise their daughters before taking on a full career in personnel for various federal government agencies. She was admired and respected by all at the federal agencies, receiving numerous special commendations and awards.
Peggy was very active throughout her life. As a young girl, she roller skated, played paddleball and was the lead Coxswain on the McClymonds High School Girls Rowing team. Throughout her adult life, she played badminton, was a great league bowler, and gleefully played tennis with Norman. In retirement, she and Norman walked miles each morning to stay fit. She even had a personal trainer in her 80s.
After she & Norman retired in 1989 they became world travelers & social ballroom dancers, making many friends and memories along the way.
Friends and family are invited to a visitation on Friday, September 7, from 4:00 to 7:00, service at 5:00, and a memorial service on Saturday, September 8, at 11:00, at the Chapel of the Chimes, 4499 Piedmont Ave, Oakland. A Celebration of Life Luncheon will be held at 2:30pm at Pearl Bay Tea House, 13762 Doolittle Drive, San Leandro.
In keeping with Peggy’s zest for colors & happiness, we encourage wearing bright or Hawaiian clothing.
