Paul Hubert Evans' Obituary
Paul Hubert Evans was born on March 12, 1939, in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, to the union of parents London Evans Jr. and Sadie Evans. He was the sixth of nine children born to this union. In 1944, the family migrated to California, settling first in Alameda, then in Cordornices Village in Albany. They eventually moved to Oakland where they settled and remained for many years.
Paul attended school in Albany and Oakland, graduating from Oakland Technical High School in 1957. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force after graduation from high school and served actively from December, 1959 until March, 1961. His military reserve status and service spanned from March, 1957 until March, 1963. After his discharge from active duty, Paul returned to Oakland and began working for the City of Oakland on October 2, 1961. He held many positions throughout his employment, retiring as a Construction and Maintenance Supervisor on April 1, 1994, after 33 years of service.
Paul met and married his first wife, Betty Nelson, in 1964. He was very fond of Betty’s late brothers (Ray, Billy, Tony, and Timmy) and held a special relationship with them throughout their lives. Paul married Patricia G. Scott on February, 16, 1993, in Oakland, California. They resided in Oakland, maintaining a loving and caring bond created from the merging of their individual talents, interests, and above all, unconditional love.
Paul never had children of his own but he was “that special uncle” to his nieces and nephews, attending their sporting events, offering encouragement for their hobbies, interests, and projects, and being that father figure to those that needed it. He often exposed them to activities like camping, fishing, and golf. He was always available to lend support, guidance, or advice with any projects, household tasks, or repairs. From installing a bathroom light, to converting a spare room into a home theater; “Call Uncle Paul” was the mantra when you got stuck or needed advice or help!
Paul was an avid golfer, especially in retirement when he and his golf buddies would play a weekly round at their favorite courses. He participated in various golf tournaments, many hosted and sponsored by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Oakland. He was a generous supporter of the organization, both directly and through the organization’s Alumni Association. He also enjoyed fishing from his boat, and at local piers and riverbanks. He was the ultimate handyman who could fix almost anything. He was an expert woodworker with a craftsman’s eye for detail. He could design and build anything, particularly furniture, creating many pieces which he often gifted to family and friends. He was a Bay Area sports fan who enjoyed following all the Bay’s team’s and was a Warrior’s season ticket holder before their glory years. He enjoyed attending the biennial family reunions at various locations throughout the U.S., meeting up with friends from the Air Force periodically for vacations, and attending weekly lunch gatherings in Tracy, California, with a group of friends and family.
Paul transitioned on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, in Oakland, California. He was preceded in death by his parents, London Jr. and Sadie Evans; his brothers, London III, Eddie Joe, and Jimmy Harold (Bo) Evans; his sisters, Ruby Jewel Greer, Irma Jean Anderson, Geraldine Watson, Barbara Delle Malone, Mary Lou Villa, and Sadie Esther Evans.
He leaves to cherish his precious memory, his loving and devoted wife Patricia G. Scott, his stepson Myron Scott, his father-in-law Charles George Jr., his brother-in-law Huey Watson Jr., his sister-in-law Luwana Evans, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces, great-grandnephews, great-great grandnieces, great-great grandnephews, cousins, and devoted friends.
