Patricia Hassett Mann's Obituary
Patricia Hassett Mann
April 27, 1931 – February 23, 2020
Patricia Hassett Mann (“Pat”) passed away peacefully at the age of 88 on
February 23, 2020 surrounded in love by her family. She was born April 27, 1931 in
Detroit, Michigan. While attending college at Wayne State University in Detroit, she
met her future husband James Nelson Mann (“Jim”) at Bell Isle while on a
sorority/fraternity picnic. They were inseparable from that day forward. Married
68 years, they traveled through life together as a team, always supporting each
other through all of life’s joys and challenges.
Pat is survived by her loving husband Jim of Oakland, her daughter Patricia L.
Mann of Santa Fe, New Mexico, her son James C. Mann, daughter in law Francesca,
and grandsons Michael and Garrett Mann, all of Pinole. She will also be missed by
her brother Charles M. Hassett and her brother in law Neil Peddicord of
Williamsburg, Virginia.
Pat worked in many capacities during her long life. In the 1950’s she worked
at the Oakland YMCA. During the 1970’s and 1980’s, after her children were grown,
Pat worked in various positions with Kaiser Aluminum, Kaiser Aetna and Kacor
Realty, all at the Kaiser Center in Oakland. After leaving Kaiser, she worked with
Larry Ginsburg Financial Advisors. She was eventually hired as an Executive
Secretary in the Office of the President of the University of California, where she
remained until her retirement.
Pat and Jim enjoyed many wonderful camping trips to Bass Lake and
Yosemite with their family and pets. They were active for many years in the
Montclair Methodist Church, where they sang in the church choir and participated in
the church’s social group, “Ages Anonymous.” Pat loved music, and she enjoyed
singing and playing the piano. She was a member of Oakland’s Distaff Singers for
more than 20 years, performing both beautiful choral music and hilarious comedic
skits. It was here that Pat indulged her passion to perform on stage. Pat and Jim’s
love of animals brought them many wonderful pets over the years, including four
golden retrievers and, more recently, their Irish terrier rescue dog, “Molly”.
Pat loved sports. She was an avid baseball fan ever since she was a child in
Detroit. She and Jim loved watching and rooting for their Oakland A’s and Golden
State Warriors.
Pat will always be remembered for her kind and generous heart, thoughtful
gestures, joyful nature, intelligence, and her boundless sense of humor. She loved to
socialize and had the “gift of gab.” Everyone who knew her will never forget her big
beautiful smile, twinkling blue eyes and her contagious laugh. She will be missed
greatly by her family, her friends and neighbors.
A celebration of Pat’s life for family and friends will be held on a later date to
be announced.
