Nancy Jane McFarland's Obituary
Nancy J. McFarland was born July 17, 1937 in Evansville, Indiana. Her parents were Ewitt and Gillie MacFarland. She attended Lincoln Elementary and high school, graduating in 1955. After graduating, she enrolled in West Kentucky Vocational School, selecting barbering as her trade. Upon receiving her State License, she returned to work alongside her father in his barbershop Mack’s Barbershop.
Nancy had reconnected with Sergeant Eugene Carey, a childhood friend and later they married. From this union two children were born, one daughter Karen N. and a son Eugene Jr. Nancy enjoyed quality time with her husband and traveling to different orders. After Eugene received an honorable discharge from the service, the family moved to Oakland, California to start a new life.
Nancy was employed with Pacific Bell, while attending Cal State Hayward majoring in English. It was her education that allowed her the opportunity to work for the Oakland Unified School District and later at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Oakland as a CBX operator. She was with the organization for over 20 years and retired in 1999.
Nancy was an avid reader since a child and as an adult, she had a strong passion for sewing and cooking. She also had a hugh interest and a special place in her heart for politics.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ewitt and Gillie McFarland, sister Carolyn S. Hayes and nephew William Hayes.
Nancy leaves to cherish her memory, her children Karen N. of Oakland, California and Eugene Jr. (Meredith) of Thinebeck, New York. (2) sisters, Linda Avery and Jennifer Douglas (Harold); (13) grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, aunts, uncles and a host of nieces , nephews, cousins; other relatives and friends. She also had three special friends, Reverend Dorothy M. Shanks, Ruthie Scott and Chris McCray.
