Myrtle Burns' Obituary
Myrtle Belle Burns
12/2/1930 – 9/11/2020
Resident of Concord, CA
Myrtle passed away peacefully on 9/11/2020 at the age of 89.
Myrtle was born in Los Angeles but moved to Oakland with her family at a very young age. She was the youngest of seven children. She lived in Oakland until 1973, when she relocated to Concord with her two daughters. Growing up she was nicknamed “Tootie” by one of her brothers and the name stuck throughout her young life. She started using her given name when she began work at Kaiser Engineers. She worked there for 33 years and retired at the age of 66. She loved her former coworkers so much that even 20 years later, she still on a regular basis met up with some of them for breakfast.
Myrtle raised two wonderful daughters, Karen and Kathy, all on her own. They were her whole world. She was also blessed with two beautiful granddaughters, Kelsey and Emily, whom she adored. She enjoyed watching them grow up and cherished the time she spent with them, which included breakfast dates and teaching them how to make jewelry. Over the years, Myrtle became known as “Myrtlie” to several of Karen and Kathy’s friends. She loved these family friends, Tom Sitzmann, Melana Matthews, Marcel Espinoza and Brad Carter, as if they were her own children. Christmas was her favorite time of the year and every Christmas Eve she would spend the time with family and her “other children” playing Santa and handing out gifts.
Myrtle enjoyed going to breakfast, watching crime shows and solving crossword puzzles. Her favorite thing to do and what she was most known for, was making beautiful jewelry. She started beading about 15 years ago and would make bracelets, earrings and beaded ornaments to give to family and friends. She would always carry a supply of bracelets or earrings in her purse to give to anyone who helped her or did something nice because kindness deserves to be rewarded. She was very compassionate and generous and will be remembered by all whom she came in contact with. She will be greatly missed by all her family and friends.
She is survived by her daughters, Karen Cassick and Kathy Quinn, her granddaughters, Kelsey Cassick and Emily Quinn and her son-in-law, Chris Cassick.
Due to Covid, a Celebration of Life is planned for Spring 2021.
