Michael (“Mike”) L. Sorey died peacefully in his home at Pacifica Senior Living in Oakland, California, on Saturday, October 2, 2021. Mike is survived by his two sons, Mick Sorey of San Carlos and Ken Sorey of Oakland, grandsons C Read Obituary

I really enjoyed doing some duet singing with Mike years ago, especially singing "Solo Tus Ojos" with him, a song Tish Hinojosa and Peter Rowan co-wrote and sang together.
As a long-term colleague of Mike at the USGS, I remember numerous trips with him to geothermal areas at Mammoth Lakes, Lassen, Yellowstone, and more. He was a great source of information about these places, and willingly shared his profound insight on the hydrologic processes below ground. I learned a lot from him and feel truly lucky to have worked with him. I also appreciated the fact that he knew every stop along the way where one could get a good burger with fries and a coke!
Mike was able to work with and lead large groups of researchers from different specialties and was sufficiently broad-based in his thinking to appreciate and understand the most important findings from the various experts. This ability was a key to his guidance on further research goals and ultimately, to the derivation of well-defensible conclusions to his studies.
He was a welcome visitor to our house, very polite, nice to our kids, and we all remember him with fondness - Bill, Lynn, Melissa, and Greg Evans
