Michael Freitas' Obituary
Michael Charles Freitas passed away in his home on May 27, 2025 due to natural causes. His is survived by his brother, Morley Freitas of Laguna Beach.
Michael was born January 10, 1945 at East Oakland Hospital to Pat & Lew Freitas. Michael was a product of the Oakland Public Schools, Burbank Elementary, Frick Jr. High and Castlemont High School. Michael grew up on the playground at Burbank Elementary which was located two doors down from his home. He participated in many activities on the playground and during this time he joined the Cub Scouts & Boy Scouts. In 1960 Michael attended the Boy Scouts Jamboree in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania which was the first International Jamboree since World War II. Upon his high school graduation, he attended Laney College and San Francisco State.
He joined the Air Force in 1963 and attended basic training in San Antonio, Texas. He was stationed in Korea, Panama and various parts of Central America. During his time in the Air Force, he was involved in the Air Police which later led to his career as a Probation Officer in Oakland. During his college time he worked for the Oakland Recreation Department and was assigned to work with the youth in Oakland’s China Town. During this time, he and other leaders took a group of Chinese American students to a basketball program in Mainland China. Through this program they were able to experience the culture of being in a communist country.
Michael was single for many years before he met the love of his life, Fran Vallette. They married in 2004 and spent the next eleven years together until her death in 2015. Michael lit up when Fran was around and she made him very happy. When Michael married Fran, he was accepted into her family of four children. He was always included and welcomed in their family functions even after her death. Michael served proudly on the Grand Jury for two terms where the jury proceedings are generally secret and jurors must maintain confidentiality.
Michael was cremated and will be laid to rest with his wife Fran in a family cemetery in Kentucky.
