Melvin W. Sewell (Poppy) passed away peacefully in his home at the age of 92. He was surrounded by family and friends. Melvin was born in Spokane, Wa. and relocated to Oakland at a young age where he lived out his life. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lela Sewell and his daughter, Raquel Martinez. Melvin is survived by his daughter Anita Shawl, son-in-law Newton Shawl, granddaughters Stephanie Switzer, Deborah Ayers, Alisa Goebel, grandsons Alfredo Martinez, Stephen Martinez, 10 great-grandchildren,12 great-great grandchildren and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Melvin was a proud WWII Veteran who served in the U.S. Army. He was also a retired member of Carpenters Union Local #713. The family wishes to extend their gratitude and thanks to Shirley Stephens, Jaqueline Drake and Doris Jacinto who were his close friends. Special thanks to Dr. Marci Gottlieb. Services will be held at Chapel Of The Chimes, 4499 Piedmont Ave., Oakland, CA on March 17th at 2pm. A celebration of his life will follow immediately with refreshments served
