Maxwell HF Huey's Obituary
Maxwell Hin Foo Huey , was born in Kwang Tung , China in the year of 1936 to Bok Tip Huey and Shee Lee Huey. He grew up during the Second World War and his memories of his early childhood were that there was very little food. He survived by working in the fields and searching for food to eat. He received only six years of elementary school. He didn’t get shoes to wear until he was twelve.
During the Communist takeover in China, life was difficult for him and the age of 14 he moved out from the village to start a new life and freedom in Hong Kong.
He went right to work to learn new job skills. He first tried to be an automobile mechanic. Then he was a truck driver and later on transferred to be a bus driver. This was the job he loved the most. It indeed takes tremendous skills to drive a double-decker bus in Hong Kong.
His mother joined him later in Hong Kong. With the help of relatives, he was introduced to a nice girl who also wanted to get married. At the age of 21, my dad married Sun Ping Lee, aged 18 on October 3, 1958.
In 1964, the four of us (Anthony was 3 years old and Borden was 1) came to California to live here permanently. William was born the next year. Our god-sister, Ruby, later on completed Maxwell’s family.
Maxwell worked long days at the family-run laundry and went to night school to learn English. In time, he learned enough to become a custodian for the Oakland Public School District for nearly 30 years and retired with a pension.
He loved to have fun at the casinos, play mah-jong, Wheel of Fortune and Scrabble. He enjoyed having morning coffee with his friends at the local bakeries. He loved to travel back to China and Hong Kong.
Maxwell always emphasized to his children the importance of education and to avoid the temptations of drugs and street gangs.
Cherishing his memory are his loving wife of 57 years, Sun Ping ; The eldest son, Anthony and wife Helena ; 2nd son, Borden and wife Judy ; 3rd son, William and wife Danni, and god-daughter, Ruby. He will be missed by his 8 grandchildren: Lorissa, Rhianna, Megan, Ryan, Weston, Wyatt, Lauren and William.
