Mary Tolin's Obituary
MARY MILLER TOLIN Passed away peacefully at her home, in Oakland CA, on July 2nd 2006, in the presence of her loved ones. Mary leaves to cherish her loving husband of 55 years, Roger Tolin, three daughters; Charlene Gethers, Teresa Dixon, Marthenia Thomas, all of Oakland, one son-in-law, Willie Van Thomas, Sr., seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. The owner of Tolin’s grocery for 51 years, she was well known for being the Wall’s gourmet Hog Head Cheese lady. Mary made local history, as the first black female to be employed by Safeways, as a cashier, in Oakland. She held her faith membership at St. Augustine Episcopal Church. She will be greatly missed by many. Visitation will be held Tuesday, July 11, 2006 at The Chapel of The Chimes, 4499 Piedmont Ave., Oakland from 4-9 p.m. Homegoing Celebrations will be held Wednesday, July 12, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. Beebe Memorial CME Temple, 3900 Telegraph Ave. in Oakland.
