Dr. Mary Anna Sing-Hsi's Obituary
SUNG HSI, Dr. Mary Anna Sing Ling – Berkeley resident of 60 years, entered into rest on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2015. Born to Rev. William Z.L. Sung and Lily Soo-Hoo Sung on Apr. 21, 1922 in Shanghai, China. Beloved wife of Rev. Walter Y.M. Hsi, who preceded her in death. Devoted mother of Joyce Hsi (Jonathan Shindo) of Concord, Sylvia Lim (Pat) of Poway, Mary Aldern (Jared) of Fresno, and Paul Hsi of Berkeley. Sister of Harriet Lou of Mountain View and Bill Sung of Las Vegas; preceded by sisters May Wang, Ruth Fok, and Eva Mills.
Loving grandmother of Jessica, Jason, Jeana, Daniel, Caitlin, Natalie, Jacqueline, and Belinda. Dear cousin, sister-in-law, aunt, and God-mother. Mary Anna graduated from St. Mary’s boarding school and St. John’s University in Shanghai, where she earned her bachelor and medical degrees. She was a champion badminton team player and co-class president. As an obstetrician at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Shanghai, she delivered hundreds of babies. Later, in Hong Kong, she worked in a HKU research lab and volunteered at a free clinic.
She immigrated to the US in the’50’s and married fellow Johannean Walter at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Berkeley, CA. She worked briefly at Queen of the Valley Hospital in Napa, then worked for over 30 years at Mt. Zion and later UCSF, retiring as Assist. Chief of Pathology and Assoc. Clinical Professor. She enjoyed volunteering for various organizations, including the St. John’s Alumni Association, the Altar Guild of St. Clement’s Episcopal Church in Berkeley, and the Oakland Museum.
Friends and family are invited to funeral services on Saturday, Jan. 16, 11:00 AM at St. Clement’s Episcopal Church, 2837 Claremont Blvd, in Berkeley (Claremont and Russell); Burial (Committal) at Cypress Lawn at 2:30PM in Colma.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, Episcopal Charities, or your favorite charity.
