Mary E. Jones' Obituary
Mary Elizabeth Jones was born in Clarksburg, West Virginia. Her father, Reverend J.P. Hubbard and her mother Mary E. Hubbard, later settled in Berkeley, California, where they raised seven children. During her father’s time as pastor at Beth Eden Baptist Church in Oakland, Mary played an important role in the family, helping to support and raise her brothers and sisters.
Mary completed her bachelor’s and mater’s degrees at California State University, Hayward. With her Master’s in Business Administration, she rose to the level of Shipping Officer at the Naval Supply Station in Oakland, where she retired after 28 years of dedicated service.
Among her many interests and hobbies, Mary was an excellent bowler. She won trophies competing individually and with her teams. She loved crossword puzzles. She took up ceramics and created many pieces for her friends and family. An avid sports fan, she loved watching her favorite San Francisco Giants, but most of all she enjoyed watching tennis on television.
Singing in the choir was a lifelong passion for Mary. She sang as a member of the choir at Downs Memorial United Methodist Church, and also in the Oakland Bay Area Community Chorus under the direction of Bill Bell. She enjoyed the music and the fellowship of singing.
Mary had a strong faith in God and was active in her church and community, where she served with caring and dignity. Although she did not have children herself, Mary was an adopted mother to many who loved her. She is survived by her sister, Lillian A. Stewart.
